I had to read an article that discusses the challenge of student engagement and motivation in today’s technology-driven world. It defines motivation and emphasizes that all humans are born with an innate drive to learn, known as intrinsic motivation. William Glasser’s Choice Theory identifies four basic psychological needs that fuel motivation:
- Belonging or Connecting – Creating a supportive classroom community where students feel safe and valued increases engagement and reduces discipline issues.
- Power or Competence – Teaching students skills and providing feedback builds confidence and encourages risk-taking in learning.
- Freedom – Allowing students to have a voice in decisions, such as classroom rules or assignments, fosters ownership and investment in learning.
- Fun – A passionate, enthusiastic teacher makes learning enjoyable, increasing student participation and curiosity.
Meeting these needs helps students stay engaged, develop a love for learning, and become self-motivated. The key is to nurture intrinsic motivation rather than relying solely on external rewards
